2025 Volkswagen ID.7 First Drive Review: Sneak Peek Prototype

We get a very early drive of VW’s upcoming EV sedan flagship.

As I sit in the passenger seat of an unfinished prototype of the upcoming Volkswagen ID.7 sedan, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement and anticipation. I am one of the few lucky journalists from American outlets invited to this rather remote location near the Mediterranean coast of Spain. Volkswagen has gone to great lengths to make this happen, with complicated flight plans, multiple hotels, on-site experts, and workshops all to allow us to get behind the wheel of this prototype and drive for about 45 minutes through the mountains.

Despite the fact that the vehicles on hand were far from the production form, I can already see that Volkswagen is entering new territory with this near-luxury EV. The ID.7 is set to be the company’s new flagship for their electrification efforts, and it’s clear that they are investing a lot in this project. Although my drive notes will be littered with caveats, I’m excited to share more information and photos of the uncovered car on April 17th, when we’ll be allowed to disclose the full story.
